The International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) is a global platform bringing together organisations working within the fields of grassroots sport and physical activity. We constantly strive to ensure that our core activities align with the United Nations’
ISCA sees regular physical activity is a cornerstone in achieving the UN SDGs. We believe that regular physical activity is a powerful tool for advancing sustainability that must be prioritised by governments, organisations and individuals.
The connection between physical activity and sustainability is clear. Communities that are more physically active have a positive impact on the environment, economies and society in general. By encouraging more active lifestyles, ISCA’s initiatives create healthier communities while simultaneously contributing to a more sustainable planet.
Physically active populations experience lower rates of chronic diseases which reduces the demand for medical services and reduces healthcare costs. This frees up resources for other critical areas such as education and infrastructure. ISCA supports the creation of safe, inclusive public spaces such as parks, walking trails, and cycle paths that allow individuals from all backgrounds to engage in regular exercise. Parks, greenways, and recreational areas provide spaces for exercise while enhancing biodiversity, mitigating urban pollution and bolstering environmental resilience.
ISCA also advocates for physical activity as a promoter of stronger social connections and community cohesion. Participating in sports, group exercises or community events encourages social interaction, reduces isolation, and builds a sense of belonging. Shared activities strengthen the fabric of communities and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive society. By integrating active lifestyles into daily routines, individuals and societies can make significant strides towards a more sustainable future.
